African american physicians resource directory
The purpose of the PMF African American Physicians’ Resource Directory is to serve as a published document, made available to medical institutions, practicing physicians, health care agencies and the general public. The Registry is the first comprehensive database of African American physicians ever developed for the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Area. Though there have been numerous organizational databases with membership information, PMF’s Registry was intended to be exhaustive and include African American physicians and residents across specialty areas, practice types, employment sites, and geographical areas.
After compiling names from various sources, an exhaustive database of 669 African American physicians, residents, fellows, and medical students from across Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties was generated.
The database included 53 demographic variables, such as physicians’ locale of practice, primary specialty, possession of California medical license, type of practice, and board certification.
